Research Machinist and Cryogenic Engineer, Indiana University/Bloomington


Indiana University is searching for a cryogenic engineer/research machinist who will also be working on a small accelerator system. The applicant will be responsible for the design, fabrication, installation, maintenance, and repair of new or unique scientific laboratory devices, equipment, components and precision instruments for research and teaching purposes. Need to know how to use computer software/programs to design parts and generate specifications needed to fabricate devices. Will test and debug prototypes and finished products; troubleshoot and diagnose equipment failure, and prescribe and makes necessary repairs or modifications. Should have a basic understanding of relevant accelerator technology and willingness to respect the special safety issues associated with  its operation. Need knowledge of the tools, materials, methods, and techniques of the machinist trade, including precision tools and equipment, and the relevant  occupational hazards and safety precautions. Must possess the ability to design delicate scientific apparatus (including cryogenic apparatus)  from verbal instructions and rough sketches. Preferred experience with high vacuum systems, power supplies, and electronics and instrumentation associated with particle accelerators, with the design, operation, and trouble-shooting of cryostats and cryogenic systems. Ability to interact with students and postdocs and to multitask efficiently.
