Overview:
Launch your career in cryogenics as part of the Superconducting Linac (SCL) Systems Group at Oak Ridge National Laboratory! As a Cryogenic Engineer within the Research Accelerator Division, you’ll gain hands-on experience supporting the safe and efficient operation of the cryogenic systems that support the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS). This includes working with cryomodules, the cryogenic plant, and cryogenic distribution systems.
In this role, you’ll be involved in projects to design, build, and maintain superconducting radiofrequency (SRF)/Cryogenic test facilities, and contribute to research efforts for system upgrades. You’ll also support the integration of key helium and hydrogen components critical to the SNS neutron production target, ensuring they perform reliably as part of the larger cryogenic system.
This is a great opportunity to work alongside experienced professionals, develop your technical skills, and contribute to innovative cryogenic technologies within a world-class research environment.
Major Duties/Responsibilities:
Operate the cryogenic facilities to meet SNS reliability and safety objectives.
Provide cryogenic engineering support for current and future SNS, ORNL, and DOE initiatives, with occasional travel.
Support operation, maintenance, and improvement of the SNS Central Helium Liquefier (CHL) and control systems to meet performance goals.
Operate the Cryogenic Test Facility (CTF) refrigerator to support Superconducting RF testing and liquid helium distribution.
Operate the Cryogenic Moderator System (CMS) to meet reliability and availability targets for the SNS Target.
Support the design, construction, and operation of SNS cryogenic systems.
Ensure efficient, compliant operations of large-scale thermal process facilities.
Conduct cryogenic measurements and data analysis to improve system performance.
Develop and maintain necessary procedures, drawings, and documentation.
Monitor cryogenic system performance and implement maintenance and upgrades.
Support 24/7 cryogenic system operation, including on-call availability for urgent issues.
Represent the group’s activities at internal and external reviews and professional gatherings.
Participate in conferences and publish technical findings in reports and journals.
Ensure compliance with all relevant environmental, safety, health, and quality regulations.
Deliver ORNL’s mission by aligning behaviors, priorities, and interactions with our core values of Impact, Integrity, Teamwork, Safety, and Service. Promote diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility by encouraging a respectful workplace – in how we treat one another, work together, and measure success.
Basic Qualifications:
A BS degree in engineering, or a related technical field with at least 2 years of experience.
Preferred Qualifications:
Technical experience in design, construction, operation, maintenance, and upgrades of process systems.
Familiarity with accelerator systems and/or complex systems facility operations.
Knowledge of related safety issues, regulations, and safe practices.
Visa sponsorship is not available for this position.
